Across the desert
Aboriginal Batik from Central Australia

Tjunkiya and Wintjiya Napaltjarri are two Papunya Tula Artists exhibiting at the National Gallery of Victoria's Across the Desert: Aboriginal batik from Central Australia. In 1994 senior Pintupi women attended a batik workshop in Kintore which resulted in some inspired cotton batiks, synchronous with the Kintore/Haasts Bluff Canvas Project.

Across the Desert: Aboriginal batik from Central Australia celebrates the emergence of a dynamic art form and the genesis of Aboriginal women’s art practice in five distinct desert communities – Ernabella (Pukatja), Fregon (Kaltjiti), Utopia, Yuendumu and Kintore (Walungurru). Each of these communities has a different story to tell in relation to the adoption and adaptation of batik, a wax-resist process developed in Indonesia that Aboriginal women have made their own from 1971 until now.

MAKINTI NAPANANGKA – Solo Exhibition

24 November – 14 December

From the moment Makinti Napanangka’s brush first touched the canvas she immediately distinguished herself from her painting contemporaries. Compositionally, her paintings were worlds apart from those being produced beside her. They were of course drawn from the same rich cultural history shared by other Pintupi women, but at the same time, were vastly different. From the very outset Makinti defined herself with a purely painterly technique, which reflected an unwavering confidence and ability to write in paint exactly what she wanted to say. This was done spontaneously and without hesitation on whatever shaped canvas she worked on, and, as a testament to her individuality and conviction, this has continued uninterrupted for more than a decade.

TJAMPITJINPA – Commemorative Exhibition

23 November 2007

Martin (Maatja) Tjampitjinpa – His art remains, each painting a self-portrait, a memory map. A gentle man of infinite joy, mischief and mystery, his passing cast a shadow over our lives. He was, and always will be, a deep thread in the fabric of Papunya Tula Artists.

The youngest of four brothers, Tjampitjinpa was a precious gift, born of the union of forbidden love. Warm-hearted, generous and fiercely loyal in friendship, his laughter was tinged with remembrance of things past. His paintings drew on that reservoir of experiences and memories, which forged his artistic sensibility.

She lives at the Kiwirrkura Community in Western Australia along with her brother Ray James Tjangala, another well respected Papunya Tula Artist. Yinarupa’s paintings have an instinctive sense of space and rhythm, with odd clusters of shape and line conspiring in her works to depict topographic renderings of her birthplace Mukula, which lies in open country south-west of Jupiter Well in Western Australia. The earthly vibrations of Mukula hum across the surface of her paintings, inviting us to stop and listen as her stories unfold before us.
